 This is one of the oldest depictions of Egyptian dancers found so far. It's an ostracon from Thebes dated to about 1300BCE As you can see, the costume is pretty rudimentary although we can, perhaps, spot the origins of the hip scarf!!

 This dress, dated to about 2400BC is, I believe, the oldest surviving dress in the world. The netting is actually interlace beadwork and it is thought that this was worn over a sheer linen shift

Wow, that stuff is old! ;D But then, "traditional" is maybe not the right title for it - it's more "ancient". I think they stopped wearing those dressed a few thousand years ago...  I don't think I would like to be cought in one on a stage in Cairo... MEISSOUN
