I'm writing about Bellydancing and its history for a send-in writing assignment. Could someone tell me how covering costumes were? I've heard from a lot of sources that the midriff baring costumes and body jewelry was not used until the dance was introduced to the U.S.
And, while I'm at it, this is what I've written so far, if it helps. (Its being written for Teen readers.)
What comes to your mind when you think of dancing? Is it the foot shuffling country dancing? Bobbing up and down to rock tunes? Graceful ballet to classical?
When I think of dancing, I think of Middle Eastern dancing. It's also called Oriental Dance, or a more common name, Bellydancing, and it's very rich in culture and history.
Middle Eastern dancing is too old to know when it first began, but it is believed by many historians to have evolved from childbirth rituals and celebrations.
The hip movements are thought to have been used along with special breathing to lessen pain while in childbirth.
It has also served other purposes: Entertainment, and an important part of Arabian wedding ceremonies.
Middle Eastern dancing as we know it today uses mainly the dance forms from Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Lebanon, Turkey, Iran, and Arabian countries. It also stems from Indian temple dancing, where it gets many of it's head and arm movements.
Many people, when they think of this form of dance, have thoughts of the revealing outfits and sultry body jewelry.
The populer useage of midriff baring outfits and body jewelry did not exist until Middle Eastern dance was introduced in the United States.
(End what I've written so far)
